Reading | Questions & Story

The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe.

The following passage is about a boy who discovers a magical world that can be accessed via the back of a wardrobe.  Following is the boy’s first impression of the new world.

There was crisp dry snow under his feet and more snow lying on the branches of the trees.  Overhead there was a pale blue sky, the sort of sky one sees on a fine winter day in the morning.  Straight ahead of him he saw between a tree trunks and the sun, just rising, very red and very clear.  Everything was still, as if he was the only living creature in that country. There was not even a robin or a squirrel among the trees, and the wood stretched as far as he could see in every direction.  He shivered….

Answer these questions in complete sentences.

What time of day do you think it might be? Maybe around 8:00 or 10:00 in the afternoon or the morning - ish. Sunrise.

Do you think the boy is very comfortable in his current surroundings?   Give reasons for your opinion. I don’t exactly think he is absolutely comfortable in his surroundings but instead he feels very lonely. Because in the passage it says, everything was still, as if he was the only living creature in that country. Also because it said that there was not even a robin or a squirrel among the trees ,and the wood stretched as far as he could see in every direction.

Do you think the boy is in a very populated part of the country?  Why / why not?
It feels like he went on a simple/easy hike not knowing that the part of the country isn’t really popular.

x

Dead man’s head.

It came whooping and roaring past, a striding tornado, all thrusting pistons and charging wheels, a banner of smoke towing from its funnel.  Denny closed his eyes and hung on to the pig-fern because Polly reckoned a boy his size was once sucked under the wheels. It howled through Waharua and was gone in a whirl of steam and leaves, dragging its smell of coal smoke, whistling, shaking the ground, over the cattle stop and the crossing towards Matahina, the Rotorua Express!

Answer these questions in complete sentences.

Is this book set in New Zealand?  How can you tell? I can tell because they mentioned in this type of story. One of the reasons is that, the names aren’t as popular in other places besides New Zealand. Also because there is no tornado in our country ( New Zealand ). Other reason is they mentioned Rotorua.

Do you think this book is set in the past, present or future?  Give reasons for your answer. I think this story was based on a fictional story, because ancient stories from the past or from their past lives.

What is meant by a striding tornado?
This explains how a tornado runs past houses, landscapes and many other things it could damage and move by.

The kiwi

Probably the best known native bird of New Zealand is the kiwi. Currently in New Zealand there are five species of kiwi and unfortunately all five species are classified as being endangered.  Apart from kiwi in protective captivity they can be found only in New Zealand’s native forests, scrub and in native grasslands.

Commonly, kiwi grow to about the size of a chicken.  The females of the species are larger than the males.  Kiwi have no tails and two tiny wings. These wings are not big enough to sustain flight.  Kiwi are incredibly agile and can outrun a human.

For protection from predators, kiwis use their sharp three-toed feet to kick and slash at an enemy.

The kiwi is a semi-nocturnal bird.  Their diet consists of worms, insects and grubs, as well as leaves, berries and seeds.  They use their 25-cm long beaks to forage for their food. A kiwi nostrils are found at the end of its beak.

Kiwi make nests in hollow logs, under tree roots, or in burrows dug mainly by the male.  The female lays one or two eggs, then, unusually the birds, the male then looks after the eggs, keeping them warm and maintaining the nest.  Eggs hatch in about eleven weeks. Kiwi can live for up to twenty years.

Answer these questions in complete sentences

What does semi-nocturnal mean? It’s an adjective , mostly active at night.

What does some of the kiwi’s normal habitats? Native forest , native grassland, and New Zealand.

What are some ways that a kiwi will protect itself from predators? They have three shaped toes that can kick their enemies to death.

What is unusual about what happens after the kiwi has laid her eggs? Present tense.

What tense is used in this explanation about the kiwis? Cuteness, small, nocturnal and scientist want to experiment.
